Two days down, 10 remain

The last 2 days have flowed fairly smoothly without turning the faucets on, but I had no idea we would go through so much water. I filled a garbage bag with the 2-liter bottles we emptied just for washing dishes and hands. I think there were about 15 bottles we went through. I sent the boys down this morning to bring up more 2-liter bottles from the basement and they said a lot of them were empty. So I went down to see how many there were and found a dozen empty bottles that had been stored down there with no water in them. When I looked at the number of bottles that were remaining that are full, I realized there is no way we will make it 2 weeks without running out of water. And to think I could have been more prepared and had at least one whole days worth of water, but instead I had let my oil lamp run empty in a way.

Yesterday we made yogurt from powdered milk (morning moo) and ground wheat as we are down to our last loaf of sandwich bread, and then we made rolls as Aunt Tina and Uncle Nathan were coming to have dinner and spend the night. Thankfully Tina and Nathan are always good to roll with whatever is going on the Black house and didn't mind our survival changes. .

We have used some ingenuity in trying to make hand washing easier. We do lots of hand washing and opening a 2 liter bottle with soapy hands was not particularly easy and dumping water is not a great way to conserve water. So we punched 10 small holes in a circle shape at the top of the 2 liter bottle and now the bottle works like a water sprayer. It has come in very handy.

So far the boys haven't noticed much of a change. There were lots of questions yesterday as to why there were "No Water" signs posted on all of the faucets. They wanted to know when there was going to be more water, and why the sink was broken. Now they have so much fun with the water sprayer bottle that they could care less if the faucet did work.

There are many things that I have found I am more grateful for, the microwave, toilets that flush, lights that turn on, water that comes out of the faucet (hot and cold) , a dishwasher, a comfortable bed.... the list could go on and on. I think reading the Little House on the Prairie series has given me an even deeper appreciation for those that didn't have all of the modern conveniences we enjoy.

Well onto tomorrows adventures!!!

We were just talking yesterday about using an old water barrel to catch rain water from our gutters. We plan to use that for watering plants, etc.

Your blog is going to be extremely helpful for us in planning our similar adventure soon! Thanks!

By the way, for Christmas, Ross and Liz gave us a huge water barrel, complete with spigot, hose, etc. We are very excited about that gift! We're going to fill it on Saturday.

I can relate to the feelings of appreciation for the Little House series. I've reread them recently and it's amazing to me (as a total spoiled city slicker) of all the stuff they did (and of all the detail she used when she told HOW they did things).
